In the first part of this interview series with Art Garfunkel, the great singer/songwriter gave us perspective on the recent passing of his long-time friend and mentor, Mike Nichols. Nichols had directed Garfunkel in two movies in the early 1970s – Catch-22 and Carnal Knowledge – and worked with him on the soundtrack of The Graduate in the late 1960s.
Here, we discuss the tune that changed forever Garfunkel’s life, and that of his songwriting partner Paul Simon. The Sounds of Silence was originally released in October 1964 on the Wednesday Morning, 3 AM album, Simon & Garfunkel’s first. The song, like the LP, wallowed in obscurity until it was rereleased with changes in January of 1966, when it reached No. 30 on the Billboard charts.
