Kiefer's Ages of the World (Die Erdzeitalter), 2014
The Margulies Collection is organising an Anselm Kiefer exhibition that is due to open next autumn, in time for the 2015 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach. The show in the Warehouse, the non-profit institution’s space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, will feature a monumental installation by the German-born, French-based artist, which he created specially for his major retrospective at London’s Royal Academy of Arts (until 14 December). Katherine Hinds, the curator of the collection, confirms that Marty Margulies has bought Ages of the World (Die Erdzeitalter), 2014. She says: “Die Erdzeitalter, along with other significant works new to the collection, will be joining our existing sculpture and paintings [by the artist].” The installation, which resembles a funeral pyre formed of abandoned canvases and rubble, fills the Royal Academy’s Octagon Room. It “speaks of a geological timeframe so long it is almost beyond our comprehension”, according to the exhibition text. The work also refers to Kiefer’s fascination with ruins and features casts of giant sunflowers that grew on his 200-acre estate and studio in Barjac, southern France
