Of course Christmas is a big deal in Italy, where I spent the first part of my life, but here in the States it seemed to take over everything between Thanksgiving and the holiday break. One of the things we worked on diligently for weeks was a handmade gift for my mother, which I proudly wrapped myself and presented to her on Christmas morning. To this day I’ll never forget how excited I was to watch her unveil it, and how I literally felt my heart swelling when she praised it.
