During the world wars, Europeans built metal and wooden protection into the cliffs of the Dolomites and other mountains for quick passage by soldiers and civilians. Hundreds of routes were established, many still in existence.
“The climbing community outside of Europe is just beginning to discover these historic treasures,” says Robert Anderson, a part-time guide for Great Britain’s Jagged Globe Expeditions and an advertising executive in New Canaan, CT. He adds that many of the original routes have been refurbished with new hardware and are in better shape than ever.
