There are a lot of standout relationships in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, but one of the most fascinating ones to track is the one between David Oyelowo’s Martin Luther King and Tom Wilkinson’s President Lyndon B. Johnson. It’s beyond clear that equal voting rights is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed immediately, but at the same time, Wilkinson highlights that, as the president, Johnson has quite a bit on his plate, and that combination results in some particularly thoughtful and tense verbal sparring scenes with especially powerful builds.
