The Statue of Liberty just had the biggest year for visitors since 9/11 — mashable.com

Last year, 4.2 million people visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, making 2014 the third most popular year for tourism to the landmarks. There were more visitors to the statue and Ellis Island in 1999 and 2000, but after September 11, 2001, visitors declined as the National Park Service imposed airport-style security procedures. In 2000, 4.4 million people visited the island, but 2003 saw only about 2.1 million.
