California Chardonnay really is changing. I first tasted this wine 12 years ago, and it was pretty standard fare back then – all oak and malo, devoid of even a hint of refreshing acidity. Now, mirroring the trend that’s becoming more apparent with every vintage – a very welcome trend – the wine has evolved, grown up. Balance is now the defining characteristic. Still rich, lush and packed with the tropical fruit flavors Chardonnay drinkers love, the winemaker has dialed back the indulgent over-ripeness, and adding a bracing citrus crispness to the mix.
