Microsoft’s sometimes lauded (and occasionally ridiculed) “turnaround” to become the ‘all new & improved’ Microsoft continues apace. A sizeable chunk of Redmond’s corporate reimagining and reengineering has seen the firm suddenly get the open religion and start to embrace open source, open platforms and open communities like it never quite did before. In previous episodes, our hero entertained open technologies only where it suited for the sake of interoperability i.e. where it would ultimately still lead to the sale of more Microsoft product. But in 2015, Microsoft is actually doing some time in soup kitchen on Christmas day and giving back to the community. Some would argue that we’re still waiting to see whether Microsoft steals the bread rolls though.
