When Chantelle was four years old, a large patch of white skin developed on her stomach. A visit to the doctor confirmed that she had vitiligo, an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system begins to attack the cells that produce melanin (the pigment that determines skin color). The melanin-producing cells eventually die off, and the person is left with patches of white skin on various parts of their body.
