The Grand Palais in Paris will pay overdue international attention to the Portuguese artist Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918) in spring next year. The survey, the biggest ever exhibition of the artist’s work outside Portugal, has been co-organised with the Lisbon-based Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Paris branch. Helena Freitas, the exhibition’s curator, says the anniversary is the “perfect excuse” to stage a major show of Souza-Cardoso’s work in the “cradle of Modernism”, where the artist lived between 1906 and 1914.
