Backstage at Topshop Unique in London, there was no denying the “Rule, Britannia!” references for the hair and makeup: “Think Jean Campbell or Stella Tennant running around in the Scottish Highlands being photographed by Bruce Weber—she has been exposed to the elements and is a little weathered and windblown,” said makeup artist Hannah Murray. But look a little closer on the runway: We couldn’t help wondering if there was a different story to tell. That side parting, the tousled hair, the flushed pink cheeks—it reminded of us another someone who has been photographed running around by Bruce Weber of late. Since bursting onto the fashion scene earlier this year, model of the moment Gigi Hadid’s influence has known no bounds—bringing with it a new healthy, happy, cool-girl-next-door appeal that has slowly infiltrated the collective consciousness. She might not have stepped foot in the Scottish Highlands or on the Topshop runway, but we sense her presence in the natural, textured waves spotted on many a London runway this week, including Preen and Mulberry.
