When the latest version of Google Translate’s iOS app was released a few weeks ago, the most exciting feature was Word Lens, which reportedly allowed users to hold their phones up to a block of text or street sign and the app would immediately, magically translate it on the screen. It also was said to feature real-time conversation translation, which would allow speakers of two different languages to talk to each other through the app — a feature that works well enough to allow an Irish paramedic to help a Congolese woman deliver a baby on the side of a highway.
