After being asked about the state of MacGruber 2, and what can be done to make sure that the comedy does actually make it to the big screen, Forte explained:
At Saturday Night Live, MacGruber developed a fervent fan-base. This resulted in the character appearing in a crossover Pepsi advert, and he then got his own spin-off film that was released in 2010. Sadly, the film didnt manage to connect with its audience on any level, and it ultimately only grossed a total of $9.3 million worldwide (the movie was made for $10 million). This failure came despite the fact that the feature starred Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and the acting prowess of Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe and Powers Boothe. Because of the movies disastrous theatrical experience, there was a time when the idea of a MacGruber 2 sounded impossible, but the film has gained a cult following over the years, which is likely whats driving the sequel forward.
