Manchester's population today is nearly a third smaller than it was at its peak in 1931. According to an analysis of two centuries of census data by the University of Portsmouth, Manchester , as we know it today, would have had a population of 751,000 in 1931. As of the 2011 census Manchester's population was slightly over 500,000 - a third smaller than it was at its peak. The city as it stands today has increased in size by over five times what it was in 1801 when just 88,777 lived within the boundaries of the city as we recognise it today.
