As soon as Grimes put out her collaboration with Bleachers on Sunday, many weren’t afraid to declare that the mystical electronic producer had “gone pop.” However, we can’t really pin down her “new” sound quite yet — and all attempts to do so have been a little misguided. Claire Boucher, has always been a pop goddess — so any sort of shift in her sound in that direction wouldn’t mean she’s switching genres. Still, as we devour new, deliciously upbeat tracks like the Bleachers’ collab, “Entropy,” and her demo of “Realiti” (released a week earlier), I keep hearing the word “poppy” used to describe them — which is like calling jazz “jazzy” or rap “rappy.”
