Hollywood is having a fairy tale moment.
The December 2014 release of Into the Woods introduced a blockbuster smash, while the upcoming Cinderella is on track to dominate the box office. Disney also recently announced plans to make a live-action Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton. It's clear — the fairy tale obsession is only heating up.
Fairy tales have the pleasure of dwelling in alternate worlds where anything is possible. However, diversity still seems to be next to impossible. As Arienne Thompson of USA Today noted about Into the Woods, "Why would a film, unbound by any historical or factual requirements, portray an imaginary world in which everyone — save for a partygoer and a few dirty kids — is white?"
