While the stately Massachusetts metropolis isn’t close to an earthquake fault, scientists say it still faces a small risk of suffering an earthquake in the 6.0 to 6.3 range, like the one that occurred about 25 miles offshore back in 1755. In that event, the ground shook for more than a minute, and enough brick buildings and chimneys collapsed that some streets were rendered impassible. Local ministers gave sermons to the rattled populace, warning that the quake was a sign of divine wrath.
