On a Sunday morning, the Australian’s woke to the terrible news that their cricket team, which was previously viewed as deities, was now in the center of a cheating storm during a test match in South Africa. Former Australian Captain David Warner was reportedly coaching 25-year-old batsman Cameron Bancroft how to use sandpaper to illegally rub the ball in pursuit of an advantageous reverse swing.
Cricket Australia banned Captain Smith and his deputy Warner for a year and stripped them of their positions while banning Bancroft for a nine-month period for the incident. The bans and the players’ are being criticized by several leading cricket figures. The union has now queried the “severity and proportionality” of the punishments.
