European roundup: Bayern Munich suffer shock defeat at Bochum | European club football | The Guardian — theguardian.com

The Bundesliga leaders, Bayern Munich, slipped to a shock 4-2 defeat at Bochum on Saturday, conceding all four goals in the first half. Bayern had already scored a record 68 goals this Bundesliga season before Saturday, putting them on course for an all-time best return, but it was Bochum who had the better day.Bayern took the lead from a familiar source in the ninth minute, when Robert Lewandowski scored his 25th league goal of the season to set the visitors seemingly on course for another victory. However, Christopher Antwi-Adjei’s superb equaliser less than five minutes later got the hosts back into the contest, before Jürgen Locadia’s 38th-minute penalty turned the match.Cristian Gamboa arrowed an unstoppable strike into the top corner two minutes later, before Gerrit Holtmann curled another fine goal into the net on the cusp of half-time to stun the champions.Lewandowski did score again, 15 minutes from time, but it was too little, too late for Julian Nagelsmann’s team as Bochum held on for a famous win.The defeat, just Bayern’s fourth league loss of the season, does not affect their position too much, and they remain nine points clear at the top of the standings as they close in on a record-extending 10th successive league title. Bochum stay 11th.Hertha Berlin lost at last-placed Greuther Fürth 2-1, Borussia Mönchengladbach eased their relegation worries with a 3-2 win over Augsburg, and Wolfsburg won at Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0. Freiburg came from behind to draw with Mainz 1-1. Bayer Leverkusen beat Stuttgart 4-2 in the late game. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. In Italy, Internazionale retained top spot in Serie A with a 1-1 draw in a top-of-the-table clash at Napoli, as Edin Dzeko responded to an early Lorenzo Insigne penalty. The result leaves the champions one point clear of Napoli below them with a game in hand, but third-placed AC Milan will go top if they beat Sampdoria on Sunday.“We weren’t worried when we were seven points off top and we won’t be if Milan overtake us tomorrow,” Inter assistant coach Massimiliano Farris told DAZN. “We only have one big game left against Juventus, but we must face every match in the same way.“Edin Dzeko (centre) equalises for Internazionale. Photograph: Ciro de Luca/ReutersInsigne fired the hosts in front in the seventh minute after Stefan de Vrij trod on Victor Osimhen’s foot in the box, and Piotr Zielinski almost made it two with a shot that thumped the post.Inter struck back early in the second half when Dzeko profited from a fortuitous deflection to hammer home a finish, as Simone Inzaghi’s side avoided a second damaging defeat in a row following last weekend’s Milan derby loss.“We must always accept calmly what the pitch dictates and then we can learn our lessons,” Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti told DAZN.Lazio beat Bologna 3-0, but in the big game of the day second play first as Napoli host Inter knowing that victory would take them two points clear, albeit having played a game more. The Villarreal captain, Raúl Albiol, made light of a coming together with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Junior during their 0-0 draw, saying that if he had intentionally elbowed the Brazilian forward, he would have drawn blood. In the first-half of the goalless encounter the Brazilian went down clutching his face after being caught by a flailing arm from the former Madrid man.Replays appeared to show an innocuous coming together, and VAR agreed with the referee’s interpretation, despite the visitors’ protests.Albiol joked that if he had deliberately struck the 21-year-old, then he would have known about it. “To be honest I didn’t see him coming. If I’d had gone to hit him, believe me, I’d have made him bleed,” Albiol told Movistar. “Obviously people will talk about a potential penalty, but it wasn’t. He ran into my arm and if I’d have gone for him with my elbow, he’d have been leaving the pitch.“Real coach Carlo Ancelotti agreed with Albiol – whom he previously worked with at Napoli – that the collision was unintentional. “Vinicius needs to understand that these things can happen,” Ancelotti told a news conference.A last-minute goal from substitute Mario Hermoso gave Atlético Madrid victory in a seven-goal thriller as they beat Getafe 4-3 at home. The helter-skelter game saw six goals in the first-half, as well as a missed penalty, before Hermoso – who had been brought on after Atlético defender Felipe was dismissed in the second period – sent the Wanda Metropolitano into raptures and his team into fourth place in the table.Luis Suárez won the first of three first-half penalties within the first 10 minutes, however his spot-kick was saved by Getafe keeper David Soria.Nevertheless, Atlético appeared in control as strikes from Ángel Correa and Matheus Cunha put them 2-0 up after 27 minutes. However, the reigning champions fell behind after a mad 15 minutes in which they conceded two penalties for handball.Borja Mayoral and a Enes Unal double from the spot put the visitors into an unlikely lead before Correa equalised in added-on time at the end of the first half.Just before the hour mark Felipe was dismissed for a high foot on Mauro Arambarri, which led Diego Simeone to reshuffle his defence and bring on Hermoso, with the defender ultimately proving to be the hero at the other end.
