Cedar County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population was 13,733. Its county seat is Stockton.
The county, founded in 1845, is named after Cedar Creek, a tributary of the Sac River, which in turn is named from the Eastern redcedar, a common tree of the area. However the Eastern Redcedar has been disappearing over time, because land was cleared for pasture and that it is considered undesirable: it is known to make cattle that eat it sick.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 499 square miles (1,292.4 km), of which 476 square miles (1,232.8 km) is land and 23 square miles (59.6 km) (4.53%) is water area from various rivers and Stockton Lake.
As of the census of 2000, there are 13,733 people, 5,685 households, and 3,894 families residing in the county. The population density is 29 people per square mile (11/km²). There are 6,813 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (6/km²).
