Philip V (Spanish: Felipe V; French: Philippe de France; 19 December 1683 - 9 July 1746), was King of Spain from 15 November 1700 to 15 January 1724, when he abdicated in favor of his son, Louis I of Spain, and from 6 September 1724 to 9 July 1746, when he assumed the throne again upon his son's death. Before his reign, Philip occupied an exalted place in the royal family of France as a grandson of King Louis XIV. His grandfather had the strongest genealogical claim to the throne of Spain when it became vacant in 1700, however permitted his grandson to ascend the Spanish throne in the face of objections from other European powers that permitting Louis direct control of two major European powers would give him too much political power. As a native Frenchman, Philip was the first member of the House of Bourbon to rule as king of Spain. The sum of his two periods as king, 45 years and 21 days, is the longest in modern Spanish history. Philip was born at the Palace of Versailles in France the second son of Louis, Grand Dauphin, the heir apparent to the throne of France, and his wife Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria, Dauphine Victoire.
