Star Control is a science fiction computer game that was developed by Toys for Bob and published by Accolade in the early 1990s. Star Control (together with Star Control II) still enjoys a cult following. Modeled after Spacewar!, each of the three games adds to this a strategic or adventure portion. The game featured the basic Spacewar!-style combat engine and wraparound screen, Mêlée (as it was called due to the close combat involved, even though the ships actually fired projectile weapons at each other and engage one by one), as well as a strategic game engine with a three-dimensional cluster of stars as the terrain. There was no real story component to the game, aside from a cursory background story explaining the existence of two alliances of alien races at war, the Alliance of Free Stars and the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. However, the main attraction to this game was the well thought-out spacecraft design, resulting in a highly effective balance between the two sides. It could be played by one or two players as the complete game, or purely as either melee or strategy. Single player mode pitted the player against the AI, that featured a selectable ferocity.
