Wayne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population was 16,842. Its county seat is Waynesboro. Wayne County is named after General "Mad Anthony" Wayne.. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 736 square miles (1,905 km²), of which 734 square miles (1,901 km²) is land and 2 square miles (4 km²) (0.22%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 16,842 people, 5,936 households, and 4,321 families residing in the county. The population density was 23 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 6,701 housing units at an average density of 9 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.92% White, 6.80% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
